Public Self StorageUsing what you already have to cushion, contain, and secure your self storage items will save you both time and money. Store your small items within the larger ones instead of placing them in additional boxes.

For example, a big bulky overstuffed chair will give most people a big headache when trying to figure out where to position it and how to make it fit in an efficient way. Well, there really is no good way to store a large chair, but you certainly can use the cushions off of it to shield something less sturdy. Placing the chair in a position that faces the wall will give you a way to secure other items that need to be kept safely out of the way of the main traffic pattern. Delicate and breakable things that may be awkward can be placed on the seat of the chair. A model airplane or RC car would be protected there. Place a thick piece of board over the top of the seat area and you can continue to stack other things on top without worrying about damage to your model vehicle.

Another good idea for using your own furniture to store other things is the use of a chest of drawers. Since it’s likely to be heavy, you’ll want it on the floor level. Take the clothing out and pack it in heavy trash bags. Fill the drawers with breakable knick knacks, perfume and cologne bottles, oil lanterns, glass dishes and collectibles, or anything else that needs a safe place to live within the storage unit. The clothing packed in flexible trash bags can then become padding to be placed around and between items that you don’t want scratched or damaged. Clothing in bags is also quite convenient as they can be easily fit into tiny spaces that would otherwise remain empty and unused space.

This is a good way to pack up a household for storage. Hardware for the furniture can be placed into the drawers; furniture can be used to protect other items, and then whatever is left over without containers can be stored in purchased or scavenged boxes from the local store. Purchasing boxes for storage can be expensive. Pack what you can in any empty space already existent in what you have that will go to storage.
