A Facility Should be Prepared for Seasonal Weather

It should be in good repair and not overflowing with leaves and debris that stop the flow of water when it rains heavily.

Middleburg PA Self Storage – Ideal Self Storage PA: You are particular about the way your precious things are stored. There are photos of family members long passed on, pictures of your children growing up, and trophies, documents, certificates, and other memorabilia that you cannot replace should anything go wrong. Since you need to find an appropriate self-storage facility in which to store them for awhile, you’ll want to go over the basics of weather preparations common to a good storage facility.

When you tour the place, take a look at the doors and any windows that might be presents. Look for cracks and spots where weather could enter. Now look up. Check out the roof. Are there bad spots or places where the roof has come up or off? Check out the guttering. It should be in good repair and not overflowing with leaves and debris that stop the flow of water when it rains heavily. The gutters should be firmly fastened to the roof and not pulled away. Go inside some of the units. Look around for any signs of water damage either from the ceiling, which would indicate a leaky roof, or around the floor. There shouldn’t be any signs of air leaks under the doors as that would be an open invitation for rodents and bugs to come in and get warm for the winter.

You don’t want them to make nests in your great grandfather’s WWII uniform. Observe the exposed plumbing. Are water pipes adequately wrapped for winter freeze? If you are in an area of the country where water pipes freeze and break, it only makes sense for a facility to take care as you would in your home. A flood in your storage unit due to frozen and broken pipes could be disastrous. Ask some questions about seasonal issues. If they don’t have a plan for snow removal or ice melting, how will you maneuver around the grounds in the winter weather? The gate should be kept from freezing open or shut, and the units that are heated should have a decent heating unit.

Summer can be very warm in many parts of the country. If your area is very hot, storage units can become unbearable as there is generally no provision for ventilation. If you have rented a climate controlled unit, make sure that the AC is kept in good repair so your stored candles don’t melt into your best winter sweaters.
